Southside Basketball Tournament

On the 13th of March our junior and senior boys basketball teams played in the Southside High Schools Basketball Tournament. There was a lot of players vying for positions on this years teams. The chosen teams did not disappoint the selectors.

The senior boys won physical contests against Telopea 22 – 16 and Wanniassa 49 – 3. They had close games against one of the finalists Lanyon High 15 – 17; Lanyon went onto play the winners of the senior boys basketball Calwell High School.

The junior boys won against Wanniassa 10 – 3, Lanyon 21 – 7 and Calwell 17 – 14. Their two losses were close games against Deakin 11 – 17 and Telopea 15 – 22.

Both teams were a credit to Stromlo High school and their families with their maturity and a commitment to do their best for Stromlo High.

On the 27th of March the girls teams had their chance to compete, and they did not disappoint in their efforts. Both the junior and senior girls teams won their first three games with both teams narrowly missing out getting into the finals. Both teams came third in their respective competitions.

The coaching and managing staff/students would like to congratulate the players on their conduct and their committed efforts.

Ichijo Performance

Last Friday, Stromlo High School staff and students, year 6 students from both Chapman primary School and Arawang Primary school were treated to a superb concert from the 85 piece Ichijo Senior School Band. They have traveled from Nara, the sister city to Canberra.

The program included a Michael Jackson Medley, We Are The World and Sir Duke just to name a few.  Afterwards, students that had participated in last years’ tour to Japan and Japanese language students mingled and made the most of the photo opportunities.

The band played at a number of venues in Canberra that included the Arboretum and it was wonderful to see many staff and students again at the performance.  Students have been talking about the performances even today!!!

On behalf of the staff and students of Stromlo High School, we thank the Ichijo Senior High School Band and their conductor, Tani Sensei for performing so beautifully for us.  We wish you well for the rest of your stay in Australia.

Facilities Upgrade Boys Toilets

Just a quick message to inform you of the progress that has been made on the boys toilets. They are very near completion and are looking fantastic. They could be open before the end of term but if that doesn’t occur we have been assured that they will be open for the beginning of term 2. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this time.  The new toilet facilities will be well worth the wait.

Year 10 Work Experience 2013

Work Experience for year 10 students will be held during week 7 of term 3 this year. While this may seem a long way away for many parents and students to think about now is the perfect time to organise your placement.

All students in year 10 are expected to participate in the work experience program during this week.

At this stage of the year many popular places such as the RSPCA have started to fill up with only a number spots left. Other places such as the Zoo, Questacon, ADFA, Tidbinbilla and the Canberra Hospital require students to fill out application forms as they only have a limited number placements available to students each year.

Once you have organise your placement with an employer please fill out a Work Experience form, which you can get from your TEAM teacher or the WEX noticeboard in Student Welfare, and hand it in to Miss Makowski.

Discussion Paper: Schools for the 21st Century

To keep the community engaged with the educational research taking place around the world, Stromlo High School would like to direct all students, parents and the wider community to the following discussion papers from the Innovation Unit – a not-for-profit organisation that examines and researches innovation in the public sector. The two publications they have recently published are:

These publications suggest that there is an increasing need for schools to consider the educational opportunities and structures they use to prepare students for the future. We encourage our community to comment on the ideas, suggestions and models presented in these documents, and to pass these comments on to the teachers and staff at the school.

We will be speaking to the School Board and P&C to engage them in the conversation, and to keep our community informed of the changes occurring in the K-12 Education space.
