ACTION School Bus Service

Did you know parents seeking to travel with students on school bus service need to apply to do so?
Dedicated school bus services follow a regular timetable and route and are available to school students only. With prior approval from ACTION, parents with young children may temporarily travel on a school bus service with their school child to assist them with travelling on a bus.

The short-term parent school bus travel application form must be filled in and returned to ACTION via post or fax. At least 10 working days notice must be provided for all applications. An application form is available from the ‘School Services’ section of the ACTION website.

Also, we would like parents and students to be aware that using the school services are a priority over the route services.  School services are given priority by ACTION over the route services in the event of a shortage of drivers or buses.  We mention this as we have had ACTION notify the school that a number of students are catching the route buses instead of the school service. This does also put the school service in jeopardy of being cancelled if not enough students are catching it.

We have produced a pdf version of the August Newsletter that will be emailed to parents in the near future.

Year 10 Work Experience week 7 term 3

Year 10 Work Experience week is fast approaching. Please ensure your insurance forms are signed and returned to Miss Makowski before week 7. All placements should be finalised at this stage with no alternative year 10 programs in place at School for the week. All employees will need to be contacted prior to the commencement of week 7 as a courtesy reminder and to find out what students will need to wear, what they will need to bring with them and what time they are expected to start! Students will need to let their employer for the week and the school know if they will be absent at any stage during the placement.

Good luck and have fun!

Mathematics and Science Enrichment Day at Erindale College

On 13 August, a team of four year 10 students attended a Mathematics and Science Enrichment day held at Erindale College. Riley Attard, James Chudleigh, Andrew Comber, and Andrew George competed with teams from other high schools in various trivia, challenges and problem solving activities.

The morning began with Science trivia – there were definitely some difficult and often trick questions, but the team did learn some new scientific facts along the way.Erindale1

Next we moved onto the Science labs to watch colourful light demonstrations relating to the atom and quantum mechanics. We then tried some experiments involving slime, esters (alcohol and chemical combinations), and flame and colour reactions.

After that, the science construction challenge! The team had to build a vehicle that could self-propel 2m as well as a marble run using only the supplied materials – paper, straws, string, balloons, cd disks, rubber bands, tape and a cardboard box.

After our pizza lunch, we moved out of our school groups into mixed ones to begin the Mathematics challenge with NO calculators allowed for any of the challenges!

Firstly, from a set of five problems involving patterns and sequences, groups had to work out the solutions to three of them. Next was the individual relay – no batons were passed, only paper, with thr

ee minutes to answer each problem. A round robin game ended the day, where teams had to score as many points possible by giving the next number in a given pattern after figuring out the tricky rule.

It was a fantastic day, putting our maths and science skills to the test and often having to think ‘outside the box’.

You R U Day

The South Weston High Schools Network Student Led Initiative this year is – You R U Day.  Like RED Day last year, the ideas and planning have been developed by leadership students within our high schools (Alfred Deakin, Melrose, Stromlo and Telopea).  The day’s theme is about students celebrating who they are and the individual qualities that make them their own person.  The day is about acceptance of everyone, rather than labelling people.  As part of the day there will be an art show where student work will be displayed, a wall to write and hang positive affirmations on, the launch of a You R U song, a BBQ and sporting activities.

Like last year there will be approximately 400 students in attendance.  Invited students will receive an invitation during week 6.

What: You R U Day

When: Monday 16th September 10:15am – 2pm

Where: Phillip Oval

Any questions about the event, speak to Miss Bolton (Pastoral Care Coordinator).

Baker’s Delight Bunraiser

In 2014 a group of students from Stromlo are going on a World Challenge expedition to Malaysia and Borneo.  This trip will involve students completing a trek, a comunity project and some sight seeing.

To raise funds, we have arranged a bunraiser with Baker’s Delight at Cooleman Court.  When you purchase anything (bread, fingerbuns, danishes etc.) tell the person serving you that you are from ‘Stromlo High School’ at the start of the order and they will put a portion of the profits into an account for the trip.

Thanks for your support.
