Lex@s Astronomy at Mt Stromlo High School

A new and unique opportunity has presented itself at Mount Stromlo High School for students to undertake Lex@s in Science and an interest in Astronomy. We are currently putting together a class of Year 10 students as an ‘extension’ science option around the topic of Cosmology which would normally be undertaken in the Year 10 curriculum in Term 4

While students enrolled in this class will follow the Australian Curriculum for Year 10, they have a further opportunity to participate in online learning via a 10 week course organised by edX (, called Greatest Unsolved Mysteries of the Universe, run through the ANU. This is an accredited course designed for students with high school Math and Physics, and there is an estimated 3 hours a week of study required for this online course to be completed. Students, on completion, will receive a Verified Certificate of Achievement. The online course has a nominal fee of $50.00. Interested students are asked to see Mr Giles or Mr Willsmore in Science

Last week Steve Doszpot, ACT Legislative Member for Molongolo kindly agreed to visit the People, Power and Politics class at Mount Stromlo High School. People, Power and Politics is a senior elective humanities class with a focus on Civics and Citizenship. News from the Mathematics Faculty

Over the next few days, students will receive a letter from their Mathematics teacher setting out the learning requirements for their class. The process of distributing textbooks and Mathletics logins has begun. We recommend that every student achieve their weekly certificate for Mathletics. The same login can be used for Spellodrome and Intoscience.
Calculators are an essential tool in learning and not used exclusively in Mathematics classes. At Mount Stromlo we use the Casio FX-82AU. A small number are available from the front office. Even though many students in Yr 7 have a BYOD, we still recommend the separate calculator for it’s functionality and we ask that parents/carers keep in mind that tablets and phones are not to be used during the NAPLAN testing.
On the letter there is also details of the learning opportunities available during the year such as the Mathematics Olympiad (APSMO – for Years 7 & 8), The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and The Australian Mathematics Challenge. More details are outlined in the letter.
If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact Mr Rod Grieve.

Special thanks to our students undertaking Cafe classes who will be providing the catering for this visit.
