Community Partnerships

Netball3Netball2 Netball1On Friday 17th October, 7 students from years 9 and 10 travelled to Boorowa to serve as referees and mentors to 6 teams of netballers from Chapman Primary School.

The students were asked by the primary school to volunteer their time, which they happily did. The team left Canberra at 6:30am and did not return until 5pm and officiated 6 games each over the day.

The feedback from the Chapman Primary and the parents who attended on the day was extremely positive. There are already plans to continue this partnership next year after such a successful day.

The girls will be formally thanked by the Chapman Primary students at their assembly in Week 4.

Scientific Investigations Invitation

Parents and Guardians,

You are invited to the Year 7 Science Investigations Exhibition evening on Tuesday the 28th of October. The evening will commence at 4pm and continue until 6pm, and will be held in the corridors of the Science block at Mount Stromlo High School.

Students have been working hard on investigating a variety of different scientific phenomenon and are putting together presentations to share with the wider school community about their findings.

Whilst it is not a requirement to attend, yr 7 students and their families are encouraged to take this opportunity to explore the topics they have been investigating in Science this semester and join in celebrating their success.

Year 10 Formal

The Year 10 Formal Committee has successfully raised enough money to be able to subsidise student tickets for the Year 10 Formal. The price of the tickets has now been reduced to $115. If you have already paid for your ticket, please contact Melissa Wales at the Finance Office for a refund or you can request to divert the money to another excursion.

2014 Japan Trip

During the September-October holidays 14 students from Years 8-10 accompanied by Mr Rod Grieve and Ms Kristina Collins visited Japan as an extension to their Japanese language program. Highlights of the trip were visits to a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kyoto (Kiyomizu temple and Nijo Castle) as well as visits to the Osaka Aquarium, Tempozan Ferris Wheel and Universal Studios where the new Harry Potter exhibition was a big hit. In Kyoto we visited the Toei Movie Studio Theme Park and (some of us) enjoyed both the House of Horrors and the Ninja training. Modern culture was highlighted through visits to the Osaka Pokemon Centre, Pop Culture Street, & the Game Centres. Students  enjoyed a day trip to Canberra’s sister city Nara and feeding the deer in Nara Park as well as conversing with the many young Japanese people they met who were also on school trips in these popular destinations. We also enjoyed a workshop making traditional Japanese sweet biscuits in Kyoto which was organised by our Japanese language assistant Akihide.

The accompanying teachers were particularly impressed with the mature, responsible and co-operative behaviour of every member of the trip. Students’ behaviour was a credit to the school and their families. Positive examples included one student returning to the bus driver a wallet found on the bus and many simply giving up their seats on buses or trains for elderly travellers.

A big thank you to Mr Grieve who assisted with many aspects of the trip and whose regular Facebook posts kept families informed and entertained! We look forwrad to sharing more  photos at the next school assembly.

Host Families Urgently Needed

Nara University High School visit

Stromlo High School will be hosting 10 students (7 boys and 3 girls) from Nara University High School who will again visit Canberra schools from Wednesday to Saturday next week. Students from Nara University High school have been visiting Canberra to perform at the Canberra Nara Candle Festival through the Canberra Nara Sister City agreement since 2004.

Due to a recent cancellation we urgently need host families for three more students. This is an ideal opportunity for our students to interact with a young Japanese person and for the whole family to develop new friendships and cultural understandings. Host Famalies are required to have a Working With Vulnerable People Card (we can assist with this).

If you are able to assist please contact Kristina Collins on 61423436 before 3pm Tuesday this week.

Students will arrive in Canberra on the Wednesday evening 23 October at around 5:30 -6:00pm. As part of the cultural exchange, accommodation and meals are provided by host families from ACT schools for three nights, Wednesday 23 October, Thursday 24 October and Friday 25 October 2013. As this is a Sister City arrangement Host Families will be provided with a $50 honorarium to assist in offsetting any expenses.

Nara students will attend school on the Thursday and Friday with their host buddy. Saturday morning is spent with the host family. It is requested that the Nara students are transported by the host family to Novotel Canberra (dressed in their school uniform) by 2pm on the Saturday.

Nara University High school students will then be transported by coach to the Canberra Nara Candle Festival where they will perform a number of songs throughout the evening.

Host families are invited to join in the celebration of Canberra’s sister city relationship with Nara, Japan. Enjoy four hours of free entertainment, delicious Japanese food and cultural activities. The event peaks with a stunning evening display of more than 2000 candles in Canberra’s very own Japanese garden, Canberra Nara Peace Park 5pm – 9pm. There will be a range of fun and interesting activities for children. Try the variety of Japanese cuisine that will be for sale or purchase beautiful designer Japanese handicrafts.

This is a cultural exchange and is not reliant on Japanese language programs at the school. It is  a great opportunity for our students to make new friends and learn a little about anopther culture.
