The South Weston High School’s Network Student Leadership Councils (or SRCs) has a history of being involved in high impact student action initiatives that aim to make a difference in our schools and local community.  In 2011 the network worked together to coordinate Cyber Safety Week, a week focused on students taking action to ensure a safe environment for all IT users. Last year Melrose, Telopea and Stromlo High Schools worked together to coordinate RED Day, a highly promoted and successful campaign to promote Respect Equity and Diversity in our school communities.  These successful student leadership action initiatives were the first of their kind in the ACT region and have received recognition through the ACT Children’s Week Awards, and the Youth InterACT Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards.

This year Alfred Deakin High School, Melrose High SchoolYou R U Day 2, Stromlo High School and Telopea Park School have worked together again, to create the You R U campaign.  This campaign spreads the message that we are all individuals, to be respected and celebrated for who we are.

On Friday 20th September (after our original day was rescheduled due to rain) 400 students from the network schools gathered at Telopea Park School oval to celebrate individuality.  Each school prepared a series of activities to help promote our message, and encourage students from different schools to mingle and get to know each other.  Students were given the opportunity to write a positive message for the affirmation wall, view some original artwork and vote for their favourite, have a BBQ lunch and participate in some cross-school house races and novelty events. The day was a huge success (despite the weather not being fantastic) and a brief story was aired on WIN news and featured in the Chronicle.

Thank you to all staff and students who were involved.

National Consistent Collection Of Data

Stromlo High School has been selected to be a lead school in the first phase of the nationally consistent collection of data for school students with a disability. Students included in this collection of data are those that meet the definition of disability (keep in mind that this is broad and includes areas such as mental health).
Parents of students that Stromlo High School make educational adjustments for in relation to students with a disability will receive a letter in the post next week.
Please direct any queries to Kendal Achurch-Ihle.

World Vision 40 Hour Famine Fundraising Results

The World Vision 40 Hour Famine was held at Stromlo High School on Friday 30th August – Sunday 1st September (Week 6, Term 3). It was a fantastic success, with 34 students from participating in the challenge to raise money to help fund the World Vision projects in Malawi, Ethiopia, East Timor, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda. The 40 Hour Famine was made into a House Competition with each Sports House competing to raise the most money and win a free barbecue, hosted by the SRC.

Oakey won the free barbecue, having raised a grand total of $2499.00! The total amount raised by students at Stromlo High School was an amazing $5986.85, which was more than any other school in South Canberra! This is an amazing effort by Stromlo High School and a real credit to our student leaders, Max Jasinski, Andrew MacMillan and Ruby Whalan who organised and ran the 40 Hour Famine and did a fantastic job at getting students inspired about stopping childhood hunger.

Students prepare to Come Alive!

The year 9/10 Page to Stage class are stepping up their preparation for the Come Alive Festival at the National Museum of Australia next term. The group of students researched their favourite exhibits after an excursion early this term and presented their ideas to the class for a vote. The winning topics were Olga Horak’s story and the intrigue around Roger Tichborne. The plays will be presented in two different styles, the first piece portrays the sensitive content in a mixed media form, with lots of sound, movement and mask, while the second is a more light-hearted courtroom dramedy.

The performance will be in Week 3, Term 4. You can check out either the matinee or evening show on October 29th and, while tickets are free, bookings are highly recommended!
