Term 2 commences – Tuesday 28 April 2015

On Monday 27 April 2015, there will be a day in lieu for ACT public servants, including teachers and other employees working in ACT public schools. This is due to ANZAC Day falling on a Saturday this year.

Term 2 for all ACT public schools will begin on Tuesday 28 April 2015. It is advised that families make necessary alternative arrangements for Monday 27 April 2015 as soon as possible, as all public schools will be closed.

Girls Basketball

On Thursday 19th of March, we had a Yr7/8 and a Yr 9/10 Girls Basketball team compete in the Southside carnival at Tuggeranong stadium.

The girls from both teams showed great sportsmanship and endeavour in all of their games.

The Years 9 and 10 squad consisted of:  Ana Davidovic, Millie Boehm, Georgie Thomson, Rachel Gallagher, Lily Wilson, Jenn McGrath, Courtney Halse and Fatima Ahmed.

The 9/10 girls played 7 games in total.  They played Telopea 1 first (5 vs 24), then Wanniassa (3 vs 11), then Erindale (5 vs 20) and Calwell (14 vs 20) was a very close game.  They then played Alfred Deakin (13-22) and Melrose (4 vs 26) and finally against Telopea 2 (12 vs 22).

9-10 Girls Basketball 2015

Sadly, no wins, swore muscles and great deal learnt about the game of basketball and new many friends made!

The Year 7 and 8 squad consisted of:  Amy Cunningham, Alana Stosik, Hollee Statton and Lucy McMaster and four other teammates.   They were excellently coached by Sarah Jaeson (10).

The 7/8 girls played 5 round robin games.  They played Telopea and won 16 to 4.  Then Namadgi, for another win 32 to 0.  They then defeated Caroline Chisholm 32 to 2 and Melrose 34-4.  The girls then played the highly fancied Alfred Deakin and lost 9 – 14.  After a short break, the girls then went on to play against Alfred Deakin in the playoff of for first and second.  The girls gave it everything but were trailling at half time 6 to 12.  They  just fell short in the end but won the second half.  The final score was 17 to 13.  Well done to the Year 7 and 8 team!  You are now off to the ACT Championships to be held sometime in Term 2.

Girls T20 Milo Blast Cricket Tournament

On Monday the 16th of March, I had the pleasure of taking a group of girls to represent Mount Stromlo High School at the Milo Blast T20 cricket tournament at the Deakin Playing Fields.

Although we were the only public school at the tournament, the girls displayed a fierce determination and wiped out all 4 teams they played in the pool matches.

Unfortunately there were other teams that won their pool games as well, and we were unlucky not to make the grand final due to the count back of runs scored.

Not to be deterred, the girls took to the field against St. Claires, and vanquished their opponents by 10 runs, thus taking out 3rd position for the day (not bad considering they won every match).

I think the girls should be congratulated for their positive attitude and competitiveness they showed on the day, and were all great representatives of the values that embodies ‘Stromlo Pride!’

Well done girls!

James Farrell, Super-coach.

2015 Board Elections

Following the Board Manual rules, the school is pleased to announce the following results:-
Teacher Representative: Ms Rebecca Cusick
Student Representatives: Callum Innis and Millie Boehm
Parent representative: None stood and none elected.

The voting this year was the same as last year. The process began with a blog article published February 3, 2015 announcing student, staff and parent vacancies. The nominations for all positions opened Wednesday 4 February, and closed Wednesday 18 February, 2015.

Initially we sought a year 10 student representative for a 1 year appointment and a Year 9 student representative for a 2 year appointment. However, all 4 nominations were year 10 students.

Voting opened Monday 23 February, and closed Monday 2 March, 2015. In TEAM folders from Tuesday 24 February were ballot papers with the required instructions. These were collected anonymously by TEAM teachers and returned to the Assistant Returning Officer.

The Assistant Returning Officer counted the votes, all candidates were informed of the outcome by Michael before it was announced to the student body.
For procedural purposes, the candidate with the greatest number of votes was placed in the 2 year position, the runner up in the 1 year position.
