South side Netball

Due to blizzard conditions the netball carnival was postponed to last Wednesday the 19th August. We managed to field 4 teams, two competitive and two non competitive which was great and the girls all had a fantastic day. Our Senior Girls competitive team managed to get to the semi-finals but were knocked out by Erindale.  Our Junior Girls competitive team made it all the way through to the final undefeated and continued their winning streak by beating Melrose 16-7. They will now progress to the ACT Netball finals and we wish them the best of luck.

Girls Basketball

On Thursday 19th of March, we had a Yr7/8 and a Yr 9/10 Girls Basketball team compete in the Southside carnival at Tuggeranong stadium.

The girls from both teams showed great sportsmanship and endeavour in all of their games.

The Years 9 and 10 squad consisted of:  Ana Davidovic, Millie Boehm, Georgie Thomson, Rachel Gallagher, Lily Wilson, Jenn McGrath, Courtney Halse and Fatima Ahmed.

The 9/10 girls played 7 games in total.  They played Telopea 1 first (5 vs 24), then Wanniassa (3 vs 11), then Erindale (5 vs 20) and Calwell (14 vs 20) was a very close game.  They then played Alfred Deakin (13-22) and Melrose (4 vs 26) and finally against Telopea 2 (12 vs 22).

9-10 Girls Basketball 2015

Sadly, no wins, swore muscles and great deal learnt about the game of basketball and new many friends made!

The Year 7 and 8 squad consisted of:  Amy Cunningham, Alana Stosik, Hollee Statton and Lucy McMaster and four other teammates.   They were excellently coached by Sarah Jaeson (10).

The 7/8 girls played 5 round robin games.  They played Telopea and won 16 to 4.  Then Namadgi, for another win 32 to 0.  They then defeated Caroline Chisholm 32 to 2 and Melrose 34-4.  The girls then played the highly fancied Alfred Deakin and lost 9 – 14.  After a short break, the girls then went on to play against Alfred Deakin in the playoff of for first and second.  The girls gave it everything but were trailling at half time 6 to 12.  They  just fell short in the end but won the second half.  The final score was 17 to 13.  Well done to the Year 7 and 8 team!  You are now off to the ACT Championships to be held sometime in Term 2.

It has been another crazy term for PE and School Sport at Mount Stromlo High School.

We have had over 20 sporting teams represent the school in a variety of sports this term as well as the Mount Stromlo Cross Country, South Side and ACT Cross Country Carnivals. Thank you to all the students who have participated and represented the school in sport and also to all the teachers who gave up their time to coach and take the teams out on the day.

Term 3 is not going to slow down with a huge amount of school sport coming up as well as the Mount Stromlo Athletics Carnival happening in the later part of the term. Please keep your eye out in the school notices and on the calendar on the website for more details and dates.

Finally, We would like to congratulate Year 10 student Ruby Wilson who recieved the Pierre De Coubertin Award which is given to a student who exemplifies sportsmanship and the spirit of the Olympics in their everyday sporting endeavors. Congratulations Ruby and we know you are a worthy recipient of the award and we wish you well in your future sporting pursuits.

Jamie receives her award

Jamie receives her award with teacher Susan Peachey

Last Friday, Jamie Clayden (yr 9) received an Excellence in School Sport Award at a presentation at the ACT Legislative Assembly. She was one of only 8 students across all ACT schools and year levels to receive the prestigious award.

Jamie’s sporting achievements this year have been extensive, including representing the ACT in the under 15’s Schoolgirls Netball and Volleyball teams at nationals. Having demonstrated her tenacity and exceptional skills during the National Schools Volleyball tournament, Jamie earned the privilege of being named in the Honorary Australian School Girls Volleyball team.

At school, Jamie has competed in volleyball, netball, touch football, softball, cricket, basketball, water polo, AFL, cross country, athletics and swimming. I think we can all agree that this was a very well deserved award. Well done Jamie!
