Congratulations to Lewis Groves Year 8

The Stromlo High School community would like to congratulate Year 8 student Lewis Groves (Year 8 by age, at least Year 12 by size), for his achievements in his sport of water polo this year. His recent accomplishments have included;

Being named in the tournament team (best 7) at the NSW under 14 water polo tournament
Being selected to represent ACT at the Water Polo under 14 National Championships in Adelaide over Easter
Being selected to represent ACT at the Water Polo under 16 NSW Championships in Drummoyne in April
Being selected in the NSW State Waratah’s team to play water polo in the East Coast Challenge in July.

Lewis’ selection in these representative teams has made for a rigorous training schedule including many early mornings, training camps and having to travel to Sydney most weekends to train with the NSW team. Playing representative sport at this level requires a huge amount of commitment and sacrifice by both Lewis and his family and we would like to acknowledge how proud the Stromlo community is of his achievements. Well done Lewis and all the best in your current and future sporting endeavours.

Stromlo High School Open Night 2013 Self Guided Tour Instructions

If you cannot attend the Open Night, or would prefer to take a guided tour on the night instead, then the videos (called “Auras”) will also be accessible on the school website at the URL below after 6:30pm on Wednesday, May 22nd 2013:

You can use the Aurasma App and hover over the images on that page by displaying them on your computer screen. Aurasma is available for iOS (iPhone/iPad) or Android. The videos attached to the trigger images provide an overview of the various areas of the school, and will be updated as the year goes on.

School Disco

The Stromlo High School Student Representative Council is holding a School Disco on Wednesday 29th May (Week 5, Term 2) for all students to attend. The disco will run from 6:00pm until 9:00pm and will be supervised by staff and a security guard will also be present throughout the night.

Entry to the disco is only $5 and all money raised from the disco will go towards replacing the drinking bubblers around the school in time for summer! The Year 10 Formal Committee will also be running a sausage sizzle and selling drinks and snacks.

We are encouraging all students to attend the disco to support the school and have a good time with their friends in a safe and friendly environment. Please get your child to collect a permission note (to be handed in on the night) from their TEAM Teacher to allow them to attend the disco!

Sydney Symphony Orchestra Concert

We are running an excursion to see Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform at Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music, this Thursday 23rd May. The concert will be an interactive performance allowing students to hear individual instruments as well as experiencing a live orchestra first hand. There are some places still available for this performance. Permission notes can be collected from Ms Morton in the Arts Staffroom.

New York Arts Tour 2013 Update

The tour planning is going really well. We’ve made a healthy buffer of money from the fundraising which is very pleasing, and we will be increasing these funds in a soon to be announced Cadbury’s Chocolate drive. We would like to reach our target of $6000 to spend on your children once in New York, so every bit of fundraising helps.

There are two events to add to the calendar for this term. The first is a team building event to be held at the National Gallery of Australia. A guided tour is arranged for students on:

Sunday 9 June at 2pm.  – (All students are expected to attend this event.)

All NYT participants are encouraged to attend, as we will be reliably informed by a Learned Guide of the various elements to look for in 3 select pieces of art. Not only will this event provide an insight into ‘ways of seeing’ and allow us to practice some ‘gallery etiquette’ for NYT participants, but it will also be an opportunity to regroup, socialise and discuss the much theorised question, ‘what is Art?’

Our second event for the calendar for this term will be a NYT dinner, to be held in week 8. More information will be advertised in our next newsletter. So watch this space.
