Floriade Performance 2014

The performances from both the Concert Band and Jazz Band at Floriade were great! The Concert Band played (in no particular order) Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (cue trumpets) YMCA (the Jazz Band showed off their dance moves), Sesame Street and our favourite, sort of, Frozen.

The Jazz Band then took centre stage, playing some classics including Watermelon Man and Cantaloupe Island as well as showing off their vocalist’s skills with Fly Me to the Moon, Summertime and Fever. There were lots of families and young children in the audience who thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Afterwards, we had an hour to ourselves to explore Floriade. The bamboo forest was a popular choice, with many tricks being played on people. The Ferris wheel was also visited which offered many opportunities to spy on your friends as well as wonderful views of the flowers.

On the way back on the bus we started a group sing-a-long of “99 bottles of beer on the wall” and reached the end of the song (with only some small cheats) by the time we returned to school.

Overall it was a wonderful experience.

AFL Maths Challenge Results

During Week 6 this term, students from Mount Stromlo were invited to participate in the AFL Maths Challenge. This consisted of logging into Mathletics, going to their avatar and wearing your favourite AFL team beanie. Then by playing 1 game of each of level 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Live Mathletics saw you finish the entry requirements.
Then every question from Level 3 and above scored you, the school and your favourite AFL team points.

The results are in and the students of Mount Stromlo have excelled again!

As a school we are the State Champions! The school receives an AFL Football pack containing 10 footballs and an AFL book package for the library.

John Cunningham (10) was the ACT State Champion and he will receive an online gift voucher to the AFL store valued at $100. Well done John!

We had a total of 4 students in total make the top 20 in the State. They are John Cunningham (10), Hannah Maconachie (9), Steven Johannes (10) and Madeleine Martel (10). These students will receive an AFL football.

The AFL team ladder based on the average score of students participating was very interesting with St Kilda being the top team followed by Adelaide, Collingwood, Hawthorn and Carlton. The Sydney Swans were placed 14th.

There were many Mount Stromlo students who participated in the excursions during school time throughout the week. Congratulations to all students that participated as you have done yourselves and our school proud.

A friendly reminder that Mathletics (and Spellodrome) is available to all students at Mount Stromlo. It is an excellent learning tool that really make a difference if used well. Log in and start using it today!

College Information at Parent Teacher Night – Term 4

Are you are a Year 10 student or a parent of a Year 10 student who has questions about College?

If the answer is yes, then you will be able to speak with representatives from both Canberra and Narrabundah Colleges who will be attending our Parent Teacher Evening on Thursday 16th October.  Feel free to drop in and ask any questions you may have – no appointment necessary!

Dance Festival 2014

Congratulations to all students who participated in Dance Festival 2014.  The girls performed a piece titled “Murder on the Dance Floor’ to link in with the overall theme of ‘Stories’.

The Year 10 Dance class worked extremely hard during semester 1 to create the piece and auditions were held at the end of term 2.  The standard this year was extremely high and we ended up with a total of 40 dancers who committed to practicing at lunchtimes and after school every week to learn the Dance.

On Wednesday 17th September all this hard work paid off as the students got to entertain an almost full house at the Canberra Theatre.  It has been a pleasure to work with this group of students who have been extremely dedicated and motivated throughout the rehearsal and performance process.  My thanks also goes out to our parents who purchase costumes, pick up and drop off students from rehearsals and just generally support the Arts and their child’s participation in such a worthwhile event – we couldn’t do it without you!

For any friends, parents or staff who missed last nights entertainment, the girls will be performing again at StromFest 2014 on 29th and 30th October at the Canberra College Theatre.  Tickets will be on sale in the front office in term 4.

Congratulations once again to all involved

Indonesia Day at the ANU

17 students of Indonesian in year 7 and 8 joined other students of Indonesian from across Canberra for a day of Indonesian activities at the ANU this Wednesday, 17 September.

Students were split into groups named after Indonesian animals, with Mount Stromlo students split between “monyet” (monkey) and “Garuda” (a mystical eagle).

The Garuda group experienced traditional Indonesian dress, having the opportunity to try on traditional costumes from across the archipelago and taking part in a fashion show. They moved on to bargaining – “tawar-menawar” – where their superior Indonesian skills allowed them to buy Indonesian chocolates at bargain prices.

The monyet group started off with traditional Indonesian dance before trying their hand at the famous Indonesian instrument, the angklung.

At lunch Mount Stromlo was represented in the “eggplant race” by year 7’s Troy Smith, the quiz draw was won by Yarno Rohling, year 8 and the “krupuk” eating competition won by Jarrah Westende, year 7.

Thank you to the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association for organising this great day and Ms Edwards for organising to taker her classes!

Visit by Canberra author Jack Heath

Mount Stromlo High School students were very privileged to have Canberra author Jack Heath visit and give a very interesting talk on 7th August. All students in years 7 and 8 have signed up for the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge and the organisers of this yearly event were so impressed with the school’s performance that we were offered this visit. Jack is one of the patrons of the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge and the students who were at the presentation certainly enjoyed hearing about his life as an author.

Book Week

Our yearly Book Week celebrations which took place during Week 5 were a great success. There were quizzes during TEAM, diplays of the short listed books, a visit by author Alison Lewis and the very popular character parade at Assembly on Wednesday. It was great to see so many students and teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters and parading across the stage for all to see. The books which took out the Children’s Book Coucil Book of the Year – A Very Unusual Pursuit by Catherine Jinks (Younger Readers category) and Wildlife by Fiona Wood (Older Readers category) along with all the short listed books are available for borrowing from the Library.
