Cake Stall – French Trip Fundraiser

Cupcakes

Students participating in this year’s trip to France will be holding a Cupcake Stall fundraiser on Wednesday 10th June in the Inner Courtyard.

Students will be selling cupcakes at recess and lunch. Prices will range from 50cents to $3.

Please support our students in their fundraising venture by either donating or purchasing some cupcakes on the day.

Cupcakes can be left in the Languages Staffroom before school on the day.

Taiko Drumming

Over 60 students today attended a Japanese Taiko Drumming workshop in the hall today. Students quickly learnt some basic warm up strategies and drumming techniques. With 30 drummers in each group they noise levels rose quickly! Students really enjoyed this opportunity to learn a new skill and then work with their team to create a loud but skilled performance!

Senior Reading Challenge

The Chief Ministers Reading Challenge caters for students up to year 8  so we have created a Senior Reading Challenge so that our year 9 and 10 students do not miss out. A minimum of 5 books must be read by September 4 to claim 5  citizenship  points toward their Year 10 Certificate. However, students can keep reading to a maximum of 10 books and claim 10 points. There is a prescribed reading list of the nation’s top 100 so there is sufficient variety to cater for all reading tastes. Students will also be quizzed on the books they read  Parents may also take up the challenge – any books started by March 1 may be counted. The reading list can be found on the Library page on Schoology.

Chief Ministers Reading Challenge

All year 7 and year 8 students have been enrolled into this great reading challenge. The aim is to read 12 books by September 4 2015 and this year students may read any books they like as there is no prescribed reading list. However students have been told to challenge themselves by reading books at their own reading level. The school is offering its own prizes such as Bronze Stromlos, canteen vouchers and book prizes for students who go above and beyond. There is also a lunch for the winning class – all great incentives although we all know that reading is its own reward!

French Language Teachers Assistant – Volunteer Host Families Needed

2015 Volunteer Host Families Needed

In 2015 Mount Stromlo High School has been given the opportunity to host, for 2 months, a French University Student who would act as a French Language Teacher’s assistant during her stay.

Our assistant would need families willing to provide full board home stay. Assistants need their own bedrooms but can share the family bathroom.

Volunteer language teachers are widely used in ACT schools and this is of great benefit to both the language program and to the families who become involved. We find that families really enjoy this experience as it allows them to expand their knowledge and understanding of France and its’ people as well as contribute to the corporate life of the school. This is an ideal way to encourage your children to engage with French language and culture and make life -long friends.

We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from families who would be willing to host someone for a period of 2-5 weeks.

If you are unable to host for a longer term but are interested in offering weekend stays, emergency back up or the occasional social activity please also return the form below.

If you are able to assist us or would like more information please email us and we’ll get in touch. This program relies heavily on the support and hospitality of the school community and your   generosity is much appreciated.
