The 40 Hour Famine

The 40 Hour Famine is being run on Friday 30th August – Sunday 1st September (Week 6, Term 3). Students are encouraged to participate in the 40 Hour Famine and raise money for World Vision projects in Malawi, Ethiopia, East Timor, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda. There have been lots of suggestions of things that students can give up for the 40 Hour Famine besides food and some of the best suggestions were: no Facebook, no mobile phone use, no talking or no X-Box for 40 hours!

Students are encouraged to participate in the 40 Hour Famine as part of a House Competition at school. All students who participate in the 40 Hour Famine will get House points and senior students can also get Grad points. The House that raises the most money will get a free sausage sizzle, which will be put on by the SRC.

If students are interested in participating in the challenge, they need to get an sign-up sheet from Andrew MacMillan, Ruby Whalan and Max Jasinski (Year 10) or Ms Haley (English Staffroom)

Please help us to meet our fundraising target of $2000! Remember that $40 can feed a family of six for a month!

English and Writing Competitions

UNSW ICAS English CompetitionsDear Parents

It is time for ICAS again! ICAS provides an opportunity for all students in Years 6 to 10 at Stromlo to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external testing situation. It provides teachers, parents and students with comprehensive reporting of results in the areas of English and Writing. The tests are an excellent preparation for national tests and the student report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and weaknesses against a national and international cohort.

All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The certificate and individual student report are also suitable for your child to include in a portfolio.

Please return the ICAS Stromlo Permission Note with payment to the finance office ASAP, that would be wonderful!

Please do not hesitate to contact Dion Oxley or Rebecca Cusick for further information.

World Vision Global Leadership Convention

Andrew Macmillan, Max Jasinski and Ruby Whalan attending the World Vision Global Leadership Convention on Tuesday 28th May (Week 5, Term 2) to learn about the issues in Malawi and also about poverty and hunger around the world. The students participated in several activities, which increased their understanding of the work that World Vision does and how our school can work together to stop children around the world from going hungry. Andrew, Max and Ruby were equipped with all the skills need to lead the 40 Hour Famine here at Stromlo High School next term. Great work!

Sydney Symphony Orchestra

On Thursday the 23rd of May, a group of students were invited to see Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform at the University of Canberra. It was an impressive, educative and moving show, allowing students to interact with the group and discuss ideas and thoughts about the different types of instruments, how they work together and the history behind the composition.

We arrived at the School of Music, and waited patiently along with other schools until we were welcomed into the theatre – the performance pretty much began straight away. The orchestra blew the audience away by playing classic compositions by Beethoven and Stravinsky and between songs, took time to individually pick out the different roles of the different instruments, giving us a better understanding of how composers use musical elements such as tone colour, dynamics and tempo to provide emotion and story to their symphonies.

Overall, it was an amazing opportunity to learn about music and to witness pure talent.

“It was awesome” – Andrew

“Something that everyone should experience” – Madzi

“It was great that they interacted with the audience” –Carlina
