World Vision 40 Hour Famine Fundraising Results

The World Vision 40 Hour Famine was held at Stromlo High School on Friday 30th August – Sunday 1st September (Week 6, Term 3). It was a fantastic success, with 34 students from participating in the challenge to raise money to help fund the World Vision projects in Malawi, Ethiopia, East Timor, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda. The 40 Hour Famine was made into a House Competition with each Sports House competing to raise the most money and win a free barbecue, hosted by the SRC.

Oakey won the free barbecue, having raised a grand total of $2499.00! The total amount raised by students at Stromlo High School was an amazing $5986.85, which was more than any other school in South Canberra! This is an amazing effort by Stromlo High School and a real credit to our student leaders, Max Jasinski, Andrew MacMillan and Ruby Whalan who organised and ran the 40 Hour Famine and did a fantastic job at getting students inspired about stopping childhood hunger.

RSPCA Cupcake Day 2013

RSPCA Cupcake Day is being held on Tuesday 24th September (Week 10) to raise money to support our sponsored kennel at the RSPCA in Weston Creek. We are asking Stromlo High School students to make and donate cupcakes that can be sold on the day. If students could please bring any cupcakes to the main staffroom before school that would be much appreciated. Ensure that all containers and lids are clearly labelled so that they can be returned at the end of the day. We are aiming to beat our previous fundraising effort of $400, so it would be wonderful if students could get board and support this excellent organisation!

SRC Report

This year the Stromlo SRC has been busy arranging lots of fundraisers for the school. Our main goal for this year has been school bubblers, but we have also managed to save for two new bins for out the front of the school.

Early last term, the student representative councils from Stromlo, Telopea, Melrose and Alfred Deakin all met up for a three day camp at Long Beach. There we came up with the idea for this year’s School Networking day, “You R U Day”. It was awesome meeting all the other people from the different schools. “You R U Day” will be held in Week 9 of this term and all the schools are currently busy getting everything ready for it. From the looks of things, it should be a great day and we’re all looking forward to it.

Some other SRC initiatives that have happened during the year include the disco which was held last term, selling lolly bags to raise money for the bubblers and some free uniform days. Daffodil Day is currently under way. We’ve been selling daffodils to raise money for the Cancer Council for all of this week.

Some up coming events to look forward to are RSPCA Cupcake day, the 40 hour famine (remember to sign up online to win house points as well) and of course You R U day!

That’s all for now,

The Stromlo SRC

Daffodil Day 2013

The SRC will be selling fresh Daffodils during Week 4 to raise money for Daffodil Day and the Cancer Council. Students can order them at Recess or Lunch at the stall that will be set up on the outside Canteen Steps. Daffodils will cost 1 for $2 or 5 (bunch) for $7 and students can write a special message to go on them! The daffodils will be delivered to students on Thursday 22nd August (Week 5). Please help us to raise money to support people in our community that are affected by cancer.

The 40 Hour Famine

The 40 Hour Famine is being run on Friday 30th August – Sunday 1st September (Week 6, Term 3). Students are encouraged to participate in the 40 Hour Famine and raise money for World Vision projects in Malawi, Ethiopia, East Timor, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda. There have been lots of suggestions of things that students can give up for the 40 Hour Famine besides food and some of the best suggestions were: no Facebook, no mobile phone use, no talking or no X-Box for 40 hours!

Students are encouraged to participate in the 40 Hour Famine as part of a House Competition at school. All students who participate in the 40 Hour Famine will get House points and senior students can also get Grad points. The House that raises the most money will get a free sausage sizzle, which will be put on by the SRC.

If students are interested in participating in the challenge, they need to get an sign-up sheet from Andrew MacMillan, Ruby Whalan and Max Jasinski (Year 10) or Ms Haley (English Staffroom)

Please help us to meet our fundraising target of $2000! Remember that $40 can feed a family of six for a month!

World Vision Global Leadership Convention

Andrew Macmillan, Max Jasinski and Ruby Whalan attending the World Vision Global Leadership Convention on Tuesday 28th May (Week 5, Term 2) to learn about the issues in Malawi and also about poverty and hunger around the world. The students participated in several activities, which increased their understanding of the work that World Vision does and how our school can work together to stop children around the world from going hungry. Andrew, Max and Ruby were equipped with all the skills need to lead the 40 Hour Famine here at Stromlo High School next term. Great work!
