Stromlo Athletics Carnival

The Stromlo High Athletics Carnival is fast approaching.  The event will be taking place on the 12th of September, at the Chapman playing fields.  PE classes are currently practisng the various disciplines so that all students can confidently participate on the day.  PE staff will be organising music, barbeques, dancing and of course, a well-run carnival that includes all the major events.  This will be a normal school day and we look forward to seeing all students there to represent their Houses!

Southside Volleyball Tournament

On the 29th of May the boys school volleyball junior and senior teams competed in the Southside Volleyball Tournament, followed by the girls teams on the 30th. Due to lack of competitive experience the junior boys team struggled on the day, however they gain invaluable experience and will be more prepared next time. the senior boys team went through to win their pool games and are in the ACT volleyball finals on the 25th of June.

Both the girls teams won two out of their three pool games. Both teams progressively improved throughout the day and were only narrowly beaten in their first games.

The teaching staff were assisted by senior Stromlo High School students as assistant coaches; they encouraged the players and demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of the game. In general a completely enjoyable event.

2013 Brumbies Rugby Shield Champions

The 9/10 boys rugby team represented Stromlo in the Brumbies Shield Carnival which was played over two days with pool matches being played on the 23rd of May and finals being played on the 30th of May. The boys played Calwell, Lyneham and Hennessy College (from Young, NSW) in their pool matches beating Calwell and Lyneham convincingly and keeping the opposition scoreless in both games. The game against Hennessy College was much closer with the boys only winning by a try.

The team played Campbell in the semi-final, once again beating them easily and keeping them scoreless. The boys then went on to play St Francis Xavier in the grand final beating them six tries to one and ending up 2013 Brumbies Rugby Shield Champions. All team-members played well and represented Stromlo with pride. Well done boys!

ACTIVE Kids Challenge award

On Tuesday 28th of May a Stromlo High school representative received an award of recognition for the schools participation in the ACTIVE Kids Challenge over the last 5 year. The award was given at a ceremony at Kaleen Sports Club.

On Wednesday the 29th of May the U14s Southside AFL carnival was held at Gordon Playing fields. The U14 Stromlo Mountain Zebras braved the near freezing morning conditions to take the field against 7 other Southside schools. Great wins against Orana, Telopea, Lanyon, and Melrose saw the Stromlo Mountain Zebras qualify for the final against either the pre-competition favourites St Mary Mckillop or Orana. With Orana pulling off one of the biggest upsets in recent history the Mountain Zebras felt renewed confidence having already accounted for Orana earlier in the day. Getting out to a three goal lead by half time, the Zebras were able to hang on by 2 points after a shot on goal, post siren from the Orana full forward fell well short. The 14s Mountain Zebras have now qualified for the ACT final against Daramalan on June 25th at the spiritual home of football in Canberra, Football park.

The Team also wishes Ethan Norton a speedy recovery from the injury he suffered on the day.

Best players on the day: B.Cunningham, J. Cunningham, A. Cheffers, B. Houghton, B. Ackland, S. Smith, S. Rogers.

Mont 24 Hour MTB race results for Stromlo Students

Congratulations to a number of Stromlo High Schools students who participated in the Mont 24 Hour Mountain Bike race.

The team named “The Fully Six” who consisted mostly of students or ex students from Stomlo High School placed an impressive 3rd in their class in the grueling 24 hour race.

After completing a combined total of 19 laps of the 20km course and racing against a total of 3075 riders the team consisting of Matt Crafter, Ruby Wilson, Mitchell Whitby, Liam Sproule and Owen Sulway should be very pleased with their result.

Well done.

Festival of the Shoe (School Cross Country Carnival)

On Thursday the 9th of May Stromlo will host the Festival of the Shoe (formally known as the Cross Country Carnival). This year it will be a whole school event, meeting in the morning at school then catching an Action bus to and from Stromlo Forest Park.

There will be a variety of activities taking place including cross country runs, staff vs students, house competitions and novelty events. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours and get involved in all activities. As it is a normal school day, students are expected to attend and no alternate program will be offered.

To cover the cost of bus and venue hire, there is a $7 fee for this excursion. Notes will be coming home on Monday the 29th of April outlining all details. Please have notes and payment in by Friday the 3rd of May. Look out for this note in your child’s bag next term.
