Ski Trip 2014!!!

On Friday the 22nd of August, 4 staff (Sam Holmes, Tegan Makowski, James Farrell and myself) and a bus-load of keen students set their alarms for the middle of the night so we could hit the road on our way to Thredbo for a day on the slopes. We had a smooth run up to the Mountains and made great time which enabled our group to be first in line for equipment hire.  It didn’t take long for everyone to get kitted up with boots, skis or boards and most of us were out under the clear blue skies dusting off our cobwebs on the Friday Flat beginner slope before the morning lessons.

With all lifts and most runs open at Thredbo, the majority of students and staff were out in small groups braving the higher, more challenging slopes by lunchtime. It was comforting to know that a familiar Stromlo face was never too far away and much easier to notice this year with such clear conditions!  We could not have asked for better weather on the day. There were no clouds to be seen or gusts of wind to be felt, in fact the layers were being peeled off by mid-morning and there were people seen skiing in t-shirts during the afternoon!  Although the snow was a little icy in the morning, it didn’t take long for the sun to soften it up which made for very pleasant conditions.  With all gear returned, we were back on the bus for our 4.00pm departure and return trip to Canberra via Cooma McDonalds, as of course is tradition.

With only a few minor injuries to speak of (and what’s a day on the slopes without a few little stacks!) and a couple of bits of equipment being ‘borrowed’ by other skiers/boarders, it’s safe to say that everyone had a great day, particularly the first timers in the group who had amazing conditions for their first skiing/snowboarding experience.  A big thanks to the accompanying staff; Sam, Tegan and James for their help on the day and to all students who attended for their exemplary behaviour, they did the Mount Stromlo community proud!
