New York Arts Tour 2013

ny2It’s 2am on Tuesday the 24th of September 2013. 40 excited students and 4 teachers, along with uncountable parents, are slumped on suitcases out the front of Stromlo High School, waiting for the bus. Application processes, meet-ups, workshops, and gallery visits are just some of the things the students had to go through to get here.

The students were selected out of four schools in Canberra to go on a trip to New York City (and a short stay in Los Angeles) to soak up the art, the culture and a couple of soft pretzels. Music, drama, dance, media and visual art students from Alfred Deakin, Melrose, Telopea and Stromlo all enjoyed the educational 12 day experience in the USA.

The time in New York was well spent, with visits to the Museum of Modern Art, Ground Zero, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Wicked” on Broadway, Rockefeller Centre, the Guggenheim, the Natural History Museum, “Stomp”, The Cotton Club, Museum of Moving Images, a great Graffiti Tour in Bushwick, and also some more touristy attractions, like the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.ny5

Everyone indulged in a lot of shopping at the locations we visited, but we also had a day in the Woodsbury Commons Outlets, and spent a long time in Times Square and 34th Street. In Los Angeles we had a tour of Paramount Studios and went to Madame Tussauds, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Dolby Theatre, which is where the Oscars are held, and we spent a day at Universal Studios.

The time that was spent in these glorious, artistic cities, was enjoyed by all, and most students even learnt a thing or two! Although at times it was tiring due to the excessive amount of walking they had to do, the students all got to know each other, and everyone came home with new friends, new memories and a tonne of photos. All of the students had a great time and would give anything to go back to that beautiful (albeit dirty) city.
